About this tool

See at a glance whether your text fits the limit for where it is going. Emoji and characters outside the basic Latin set are counted the way people see them.

Fitting your text into strict character limits

Many places on the internet cut text off at a fixed number of characters, and they rarely warn you before they do. A search result title may be trimmed on a phone, an SMS longer than its limit is split into several messages, a social post may be truncated behind a 'more' link, and form fields often reject anything over their maximum. Checking the count before you publish keeps the most important words visible.

This counter shows characters with and without spaces, along with progress against common limits, so you can see at a glance where your text stands. Emoji and characters from scripts such as Devanagari are counted as people see them, which is what most apps display. Be aware that some systems count differently behind the scenes. Older SMS systems, for example, treat many emoji and non-Latin characters as taking extra space, so a message with a few emoji can split sooner than expected.

When you need to trim, start with filler words and repeated ideas rather than the key message. Put the most important words first, because that is what survives if a platform cuts the end. For meta descriptions and ad copy, read the shortened version on its own to make sure it still makes sense. Abbreviations can save space, but too many make text harder to read and can look careless. Because everything runs in your browser, you can safely check customer messages, bios and drafts without them being stored anywhere. Keep a note of the limits you use most often so you can write to them from the start next time.

Are emoji counted as one character?

Here, yes. Some platforms count certain emoji as two, so leave a little room.
