About this tool

Short, readable slugs are easier to share and tell searchers what a page is about. Paste one title per line to make several slugs at once.

Writing clean URLs that people and search engines trust

A slug is the readable part of a web address that comes after the domain, such as 'home-loan-tips' in a blog URL. Good slugs are short, lowercase and describe the page clearly. They are easier to share in messages, easier to remember, and they give both visitors and search engines a quick sense of what the page is about before anyone clicks.

This generator turns a title into a clean slug by converting it to lowercase, replacing spaces with hyphens and removing punctuation and symbols that cause problems in URLs. Hyphens are the standard separator because search engines treat them as spaces between words, while underscores can join words together. If your title contains accented letters or characters from other scripts, check the result carefully, since some systems handle them differently.

Shorter is usually better. A title like 'Ten Simple Ways to Save Money on Your Electricity Bill This Summer' can become 'save-money-electricity-bill' without losing meaning. Removing filler words such as 'the', 'a' and 'to' helps, but keep any word that changes the meaning. Avoid dates and numbers that will age, like a year, unless the page is genuinely tied to that period, because changing a slug later means setting up redirects to keep old links working. Paste several titles, one per line, to create slugs for a batch of pages at once, which is handy when planning a new section of a site or importing products into an online store. Once a page is published, treat its slug as permanent.

Questions

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

It often makes slugs shorter and clearer, but keep them when removing them changes the meaning.

Hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators in URLs, and they are the common convention.
