About this tool

Application forms often specify photo size in pixels or in centimetres. Enter either, keep the aspect ratio locked, and download.

Resizing photos for forms, prints and social media

Many applications ask for a photo in an exact size, and getting it wrong is a common reason for rejected forms. Exam and passport photos are often specified in centimetres or millimetres, while websites and social media use pixels. This resizer handles both, with presets for common sizes such as passport photos, exam photos, signatures, Instagram posts and YouTube thumbnails, so you can produce the right file in a few clicks.

When a size is given in centimetres, the number of pixels depends on the resolution, measured in dots per inch. At 300 DPI, which suits printing, a 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre photo becomes 413 by 531 pixels. Enter the size in centimetres and the DPI, and the tool works out the pixels for you. For screens, simply enter the pixel size you need. You can also resize by percentage, which is handy for shrinking a batch of images evenly.

Keep the aspect ratio locked unless you have a reason not to, otherwise faces and objects look stretched or squashed. If the target shape differs from your photo, choose whether to crop the image to fill the space or fit it inside with a plain background. Remember that making a small image larger cannot add detail that was never captured, so the result may look soft; always start from the largest original you have. For forms with both a size and a file-size limit, resize first and then use the compressor. All processing happens on your device, so personal photos are never uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose one or more images, or drop them onto the box.
  2. Adjust the settings. The preview and file size update straight away.
  3. Download the result.

Questions

What size is a passport photo in pixels?

The Indian passport photo is 51 × 51 mm, which is about 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI.

Will resizing up make my photo sharper?

No. Enlarging can only add pixels by guessing, so the image may look soft.
