About this tool

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Indian guidelines use lower cut-offs than WHO because health risks start at a lower BMI for South Asians.

Reading your BMI with the right cut-offs

Body mass index compares your weight with your height to give a single number that is quick to calculate and widely used in health checks. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. On its own, BMI does not measure body fat or fitness, but it is a reasonable first signal of whether your weight may be putting your health at risk.

This calculator shows two sets of ranges because research has found that many South Asian people face higher risks of diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels than people of European descent. Under the commonly used Asian cut-offs, a BMI from 18.5 to 22.9 is considered normal, 23 to 24.9 overweight, and 25 or above obese. The standard international ranges place the overweight line at 25 and obesity at 30. If you are of Indian origin, the Asian ranges are generally the more useful guide.

BMI has known limits. Athletes with a lot of muscle can show a high BMI while being very fit, and older adults may have a normal BMI despite losing muscle. Waist measurement adds useful information, since fat around the middle is linked to higher risk even at a normal BMI. Use the result as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor rather than a verdict. If your BMI is outside the normal range, small, steady changes to food, sleep and daily movement usually work better than drastic diets, and a health professional can help you set a safe target.

Questions

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?

18.5 to 22.9 under the Asian cut-offs. 23 to 24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It does not tell muscle from fat and is not meant for children, pregnant women or athletes. Treat it as a screening number and talk to a doctor about your health.
