Converting units, including Indian land measures

Unit conversions are part of daily life, from recipe quantities and parcel weights to room sizes and temperatures abroad. This converter shows the value in every unit of a category at once, so you can type a number once and read all the alternatives, rather than converting one pair at a time. It is especially helpful when a document or listing uses an unfamiliar unit.

Land and property measures in India deserve special care. Square feet and square metres are common in cities, while gaj, guntha, cent and acre appear in land records across different states. Other traditional units, such as bigha and kanal, vary so much from one region to another that the same word can describe very different areas, so they are not included here. The converter uses standard values for the units it lists, but for any property transaction, confirm the local definition with the land records office or a registered surveyor before relying on a figure.

A few quick reference points help with mental checks. One square yard, often called a gaj, is exactly nine square feet. One square metre is about 10.76 square feet. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, and one kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. For temperature, the formula is not a simple multiplication: to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 and add 32. If a result looks surprisingly large or small, compare it with these anchors before using it. When accuracy matters, such as in construction, medicine or shipping, keep more decimal places and round only at the final step to avoid small errors adding up.

How to use it

  1. Pick a category, such as Area or Weight.
  2. Type a value in any unit's box.
  3. Read the same value in every other unit.

Questions

How many square feet is one gaj?

One gaj (square yard) is 9 square feet. One guntha is 1,089 square feet and one cent is 435.6 square feet.

Why isn't bigha included?

A bigha's size differs from state to state, sometimes from district to district, so a single conversion would be misleading.
