About this tool

YAML is easier to read and comment than JSON. Strings that would be misread as other types are quoted automatically.

Turning JSON into readable YAML

YAML presents the same data as JSON but without most of the brackets, braces and quotes, which makes long configuration files much easier to read and edit by hand. Teams often start with JSON produced by a tool or an API and convert it to YAML for a Kubernetes manifest, a CI workflow, an OpenAPI specification or an application settings file.

This converter produces clean YAML with consistent indentation. Strings that could be misread as another type are quoted automatically. For example, values like yes, no, on, off, a number with a leading zero or something that looks like a date are wrapped in quotes so they stay as text when the YAML is read again. That protects you from a class of subtle bugs that are hard to spot by eye.

Once you have YAML, you can add comments to explain settings, which is one of its biggest advantages over JSON. Keep the indentation consistent when editing, using spaces rather than tabs, because the structure depends on it. Long strings may be written on a single line; you can switch them to YAML's block style if you want them spread across lines. If the target tool has a schema or validation command, run the converted file through it, since a valid YAML file can still contain settings the tool does not expect. You can always convert back with the YAML to JSON tool to check that nothing changed. Everything happens in your browser, so internal configuration stays private. Many teams keep both formats side by side during a migration until everyone is comfortable.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text into the input box, or open a file from your device.
  2. Adjust the options. The result updates instantly.
  3. Copy the result, or download it as a file where offered.

Questions

Is the output valid YAML 1.2?

Yes. Any valid JSON converts to equivalent YAML.

Are comments preserved?

JSON has no comments, so there are none to carry over. You can add them to the YAML afterwards.
