Converting YAML configuration safely

YAML is popular for configuration because it is easy to read and supports comments. Docker Compose files, Kubernetes manifests, CI pipelines and many application settings use it. Sometimes, though, you need the same data as JSON, for an API, a script, or a tool that does not read YAML. This converter handles that in one step and shows the result as formatted JSON.

Indentation is the most common source of YAML errors, because YAML uses spaces to show structure. A single extra or missing space can move a key to the wrong level or break the file entirely. Tabs are not allowed for indentation. When there is a problem, this tool reports the line and column so you can find it quickly. Files containing several documents separated by three dashes are converted into a JSON array, one item per document.

Watch for values that YAML interprets in surprising ways. Unquoted words such as yes, no, on and off may be read as true or false by some parsers, which is a well-known source of bugs in country codes and settings. Numbers with leading zeros or values that look like dates can also be converted unexpectedly. If a value must stay as text, wrap it in quotes in the YAML. Comments are dropped during conversion, since JSON has no place for them, so keep your YAML file as the source of truth. Everything runs locally in your browser, which matters when configuration files contain hostnames, keys or internal settings. Converting both ways is also a quick check that a hand-edited file still means what you think it means.
