Converting spreadsheet rows into JSON

CSV is the common language of spreadsheets, exports and reports, while JSON is what most web apps, APIs and scripts expect. Converting between them is a routine job when you are importing a product list, seeding a test database, preparing data for a chart, or sending a batch of records to an API. This converter turns each row into an object, using the header row for the keys.

Real CSV files are messier than they look, and the parser handles the common complications. Fields wrapped in quotes can contain commas and even line breaks without breaking the structure. Doubled quotes inside a quoted field are read as a single quote mark. Files exported in some regions use semicolons, tabs or pipes instead of commas. The delimiter is detected automatically, and you can pick it yourself if columns come out merged into one.

Decide whether numbers should stay as text or be converted to real numbers with the 'Detect numbers' option. Converting is usually what you want for prices and quantities, but keep values like PIN codes, phone numbers and IDs with leading zeros as text, otherwise the zeros disappear. Check that the header row has no duplicate or blank names, since they become keys in every object. Empty cells become empty strings, which you may want to clean up depending on how the data will be used. For large files, preview the first few objects to confirm the columns line up before using the full output. All processing happens in your browser, so private spreadsheets are never uploaded.
