About this tool

You contribute 12% of basic to EPF. Of the employer's 12%, 3.67% goes to EPF and 8.33% to the pension scheme (EPS), capped at ₹1,250 a month. Interest is credited yearly.

Watching your EPF grow until retirement

The Employees' Provident Fund is a forced saving that many people underestimate. Every month, 12% of your basic pay plus dearness allowance goes into your account, and your employer adds a matching contribution. Of the employer's share, 8.33% goes to the pension scheme, up to ₹1,250 a month, and the rest is credited to your EPF. Interest is declared every year and compounds on the full balance.

Over a long career the numbers become large. Because your salary usually rises, your contributions rise with it, and compounding works on a growing base. This calculator lets you enter an expected yearly salary increase and the current interest rate, then shows the balance at retirement along with how much came from contributions and how much from interest. Seeing the interest share is a good reminder of why withdrawing PF when changing jobs can be costly.

There are a few tax points to know. Interest earned on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable, which mainly affects high earners or those making voluntary contributions. Withdrawals after five years of continuous service are tax-free, while earlier withdrawals may attract tax and TDS. When you change jobs, transfer the balance to your new employer through your UAN instead of withdrawing it, so the service period stays continuous and the money keeps compounding. You can also add voluntary contributions above 12%, which earn the same interest and are a simple, low-risk way to build long-term savings. Check your passbook on the EPFO portal now and then to confirm every contribution has been credited correctly.
