About this tool
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Your FIRE number is the corpus whose yearly withdrawals cover your expenses indefinitely, based on a safe withdrawal rate.
Working out your financial independence number
Financial independence means having enough invested that withdrawals can cover your living costs without a salary. Your FIRE number is that target. It is calculated by dividing your yearly expenses at the point you want to stop working by a safe withdrawal rate. At a 3.5% rate, someone who expects to spend ₹6 lakh a year needs roughly ₹1.7 crore. At 4%, the same spending needs ₹1.5 crore.
The withdrawal rate deserves care. The popular 4% rule came from American market data over thirty-year retirements. Retiring early in India often means a longer retirement and higher inflation, so a rate between 3 and 3.5 percent is a more cautious starting point. Lower rates mean a larger target but a better chance that the money lasts.
Use the calculator to see how strongly expenses drive the result. Cutting ₹5,000 from monthly spending reduces your FIRE number by far more than ₹5,000, because every rupee of yearly expense needs many rupees of corpus behind it. That is why people pursuing FIRE often focus on lifestyle as much as returns. Remember that the number is a goal, not a guarantee. Markets can disappoint, health costs can surprise, and plans change. Many people choose a flexible version, such as working part-time or taking on projects they enjoy, which reduces how much they need to withdraw and gives the portfolio more time to grow. Recheck your number every year as your spending and savings change. Keeping a separate emergency fund also stops a single bad year from forcing you to sell investments at the wrong time.

Questions
What withdrawal rate should Indians use?
The 4% rule comes from US data. With higher inflation in India many planners use 3–3.5%, which means a corpus of about 30–33 times annual expenses.
Does this include inflation?
Yes. Your expenses are inflated to the year you plan to retire before the FIRE number is calculated.
